Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Announces $2.7 Million in Grants to Journalism Organizations

(Oklahoma City) ---- Robert J. Ross, Vice President and Executive Director of the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, announced today the distribution of $2.7 million in grants to forty-five organizations nation wide.

Edith Kinney Gaylord founded the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation in 1982 to support local and national efforts to improve the quality of journalism practices among various media. The Foundation currently provides funding for projects that promote excellence and instill high ethical standards in journalism.

Organizations awarded grants from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation include:

• $600,000 to the University of Oklahoma to establish the Institute for Research and Training at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

• $500,000 to the University of Maryland in support of a new $25 million journalism building at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

• $113,000 to the University of Central Oklahoma for a 20-station digital photography computer lab.

• $100,000 to the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation to sponsor the National Media Symposium to be held in conjunction with the tenth anniversary ceremony of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

• $35,000 to the American Society of Newspaper Editors to fund the Growing Scholastic Journalism in Oklahoma program. The program provides funding for high school journalism teachers to receive training and grants to start or improve their high school newspaper.

• $25,000 to the Putnam City Public Schools Foundation for photography equipment and yearbook programs at Putnam City, Putnam City North and Putnam City West high schools.

• $10,000 to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma to microfilm and digitize 85 years of the student newspaper, The Trend.

• Other grants in excess of $70,000 include: Alfred Friendly Foundation, tcc Group, Oklahoma City University, Belmont University, Lane College, Middle Tennessee State University.

• Additional grants include: University of Arkansas, Daniel Pearl Foundation, Fund for American Studies, National Press Foundation, Pundit Productions, Kennesaw University, Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, Eastern Illinois University, Mid-America Press Institute, Northwestern University, Ball State University, Barber Country North U.S.D. 254 Medicine Lodge, KS, Hutchinson Community College, Cumberland College, Kernel Press at University of Kentucky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, National Association of Black Journalists, Institute for Global Ethics, Winona State University, Investigative Reporters and Editors, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Ithaca College, Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, Casady School, Families for Excellence in Education – Harding Charter Preparatory High School, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma State University, Rose State College, Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Television Journalism, Student Media Company at Southern Methodist University, Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project.
